US President Joe Biden on Monday expressed his profound condolences over the tragic loss of 24 lives in the devastating wildfires ravaging southern California, particularly in Los Angeles.

“Our hearts ache for the 24 innocent souls we have lost in the wildfires across Los Angeles. Jill and I pray for them and their loved ones,” Biden said in a statement.

The President acknowledged the ongoing destruction caused by the unprecedented wildfires and emphasized his administration’s commitment to supporting firefighting efforts. “I am being frequently updated on the intensive efforts to contain the fires. I have directed our team to respond promptly to any requests for additional federal firefighting assistance,” he stated.

Biden confirmed that hundreds of federal personnel, along with specialized aerial and ground resources, have been deployed to aid California’s response. He also reiterated his administration’s focus on helping affected communities as conditions remain dire.

“My administration remains laser-focused on supporting survivors and ensuring all available resources are utilized in this urgent fight, especially as winds are expected to worsen the situation,” he said.

The President expressed deep gratitude to the firefighters and first responders battling the flames. “To the brave firefighters and first responders working tirelessly to suppress these fires and save lives: our nation is grateful. You represent the best of America, and we are in your debt.”

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the death toll from the wildfires has reached 24, with 16 individuals still unaccounted for as of Sunday, reported the New York Post.

Most of the fatalities occurred in the Eaton Fire, with additional losses reported in the Palisades Fire. Nearly 200,000 residents have been displaced, and approximately 39,000 acres of land—equivalent to two-and-a-half times the size of Manhattan—have been destroyed.

As California braces for worsening conditions, Biden pledged continued federal support to combat the fires and aid those affected by the disaster.
